Frequently Asked Questions
For groups larger than 10, please call ahead well in advance to arrange additional
logistics.
Kids ages 6 to 12 always travel FREE.
Q. What time does my tour begin and end?
A. Depending on weather conditions, your guide will coordinate your
pick up time (generally middays / early afternoons). The only exception
to this is the Area 51 Territory tour - departure from Las Vegas is
generally ~8am.
Q. Can I get "bottle service" or bring along some beer?
A. No. Land sailing is like driving a car - if you're under the
influence, you run the risk of an accident. Sorry, no exceptions.
Q. What physical requirements must I have in order to go land sailing?
A. Minimum height: 44" Maximum height: 76" Maximum weight: 260 lbs.
Even if you are in a wheelchair, you can go land sailing - all you need
is the use of your hands and arms. You only need the same strength as
pulling your loved ones close to give them a hug. :)
Q. Can I rent a land yacht and go do my own thing?
A. Yes, for $150/day AND you agree to handle repairs and/or replacement
parts. For example, a torn sail or mast sleeve costs (at cost) between
one and two hundred dollars to repair. The hardware is very
specialized. The only replacement parts you can find at the hardware
store are metric nuts & bolts - beyond that, you'll be liable for
at least $40 USD per lost part. A safety orientation, signed waiver, and credit card deposit is required.
You will be provided one spare tire. If after using your spare and you
get another flat tire, you'll have to repair it yourself using a patch
kit and an air pump. All this responsibility & hassle can be
avoided by joining an organized tour - you'll still be able to get
waaayyyyy out on your own if you like.
Q. Are private trips available?
A. Yes, please send an email to priv.trip@landsailingtours.com and
arrangements will be made promptly. Note: slightly higher rates will
apply.
Q. Do you have references?
A. Yes, have a look at the references page.
If you send a note to ref.check@landsailingtours.com, you will receive
a list of past customers and their detailed contact information.
Q. Is there a vegetarian or kosher lunch menu available?
A. Yes, please communicate as far in advance as possible if you have any
of these (or other) dietary requirements.
Q. My hotel's lobby/entry area is very large, confusing, crowded, and hectic. How will my
guide find me / how will I find my guide?
A. Please be waiting at your hotel's TOUR BUS lobby. Confirm with your
hotel's front desk or concierge the location and walking directions. Be
watching for a clearly marked Landsailing Tours van to arrive ± 10
minutes from your scheduled pick up time.
Q. What is the refund policy? And what if there's not enough (<8 mph) / too much (>25 mph) wind?
A. Sorry, no refunds without 24 hours advance notice. Land sailing
requires wind speeds of between 8 and 24 mph in order to have the most
fun - safely. Keep in mind that the wide open desert is usually breezy
by default, especially in the afternoon. To date, less than 3% of all
trips have resulted in having to reschedule due to weather. In the
event that you didn't get to sail, you will receive a printable voucher
good for a free trip on a future date depending on availability (to be
determined by Land Sailing Tours).
Q. Land sailing looks like a lot of fun, but will
I tip over hurt myself?
A. As with any outdoor sport, there is risk. You will learn how to
operate your land sailer safely and how to prevent tipping over.
Remember, you will always be in control - how fast or how slow you go
is entirely dependent upon how you decide to handle your equipment. You
will quickly get a "feel" for the wind, your land sailer's
characteristics, and then it all comes together quite naturally and
effortlessly. You'll be having so much fun you might never want to stop!
If
you weigh less than 120 lbs, and if it is a very windy day, you will be
paired with another rider in a two-seat landsailer - you will then be
able to take turns being the "captain". :)
Q. What items & clothing do I need to bring with me?
A. The most important items include sunglasses, snug-fitting hat (with visor; and a tie string is recommended), sun
block lotion, lip balm, skin moisturizing lotion, camera (with film and spare
batteries), any important medications, and a desire to have
a great time & make new friends. You may bring a portable CD/MP3 player
(with "in-the-ear" headphones) so you can listen to your favorite music
while land sailing, however, keep the volume at a level where you can still hear what's going on around you.
In
terms of clothing, wear pants (no shorts) and closed-toe shoes (no
sandals). Choose casual clothes that you won't mind getting a little
dirty & dusty. The same goes for your shoes - but don't worry - a
damp cloth is usually all that's needed to clean your shoes when you
get back in. During the early spring and late fall, you are advised to
bring a coat, hat, gloves, and even a muffler. The desert air can be
deceivingly cool, especially when you factor in the "wind chill" effect. |
